Background: This study aimed to evaluate facial photoanthropometric parameters in patients with OI.Material and Methods: We selected 20 Brazilian patients diagnosed with OI treated at the Extension Service forMinors in Need of Specialized Treatment of the Dentistry Course at the Federal University of Ceará (Fortaleza,Brazil), of both sexes, without age restriction, and able to understand and sign the informed consent form (ICF).As a control group, 38 non-syndromic Brazilian individuals, categorized as ASA I, able to understand and sign theICF, matched by sex, age, and Legan and Burstone facial profile were selected. The exclusion criteria were: previ-ous orthodontic treatment, craniofacial trauma and/or surgery, and the presence of any other systemic diseases.Photoanthropometric analysis of the 18 facial parameters proposed by Stengel-Rutkowski et al. (1984), previouslyestablished in the literature for craniofacial syndromes, were conducted. A single examiner digitally performedall effective and angular measurements with the CorelDRAWX7® software.Results: Horizontally shortened ears (p<0.001) but larger in height in relation to the face (p=0.012) were shownto be alterations belonging to individuals with OI.Conclusions: OI patients present distinct photoanthropometric parameters inherent in this condition.(AU)

Aim: To analyze the perceptions of public service dentists on informational aspects regarding patient safety in dental care. Materials and methods: Descriptive research in which a composite outcome was constructed to present the perceptions of research subjects on the subject. The outcome proposes the perception of three informational aspects related to patient safety: knowledge about the notification system, knowledge about the National Patient Safety Program (PNSP) and information about safety available in the workplace. Data collection took place online, through a self-administered questionnaire, with dental surgeons working in the public health service in Porto Alegre/RS. Results: Of the total number of 47 participants, 74.4% were women, 91.4% declared themselves to be white, 65.9% were 31 years of age or older, 74.5% had graduated more than five years and 59.6% worked in the Unified Health System for more than 5 years. The prevalence of the outcome was 12.8%. When separately analyzing each outcome variable, the prevalence was 34% for knowledge about the reporting system, 34% for the knowledge in regards of the National Patient Security Program and for the presence of information available in the workplace was 38.3%. Discussion: The results point to the need to work on informational issues with these professionals so that in the stressful day-to-day work, patient safety is something naturally present during dental care in the workspaces. Conclusion: It is concluded that reports of dental incidents were few and the informational context on the subject needs to be worked on so that patient safety is always the focus of attention in dental practice.


Objetivo: Analisar as percepções de cirurgiões-dentistas do serviço público sobre aspectos informacionais a respeito da segurança do paciente no cuidado odontológico. Materiais e métodos: Pesquisa descritiva em que um desfecho composto foi construído para apresentar as percepções dos sujeitos de pesquisa sobre o tema. O desfecho propõe a percepção positiva de três aspectos informacionais relacionados à segurança do paciente: conhecimento acerca do sistema de notificações, conhecimento sobre o Programa Nacional de Segurança do Paciente (PNSP) e informações sobre segurança disponíveis no local de trabalho. A coleta de dados aconteceu online, por meio de um questionário autoaplicável, com cirurgiões-dentistas trabalhadores do serviço público de saúde de Porto Alegre/RS. Resultados: Participaram deste estudo 47 cirurgiões(ãs)-dentistas, sendo 74,4% mulheres, 91,4% autodeclarados da raça/cor branca, 65,9% possuíam 31 anos ou mais de idade, 74,5% estavam formados há mais de cinco anos e 59,6% trabalhavam no Sistema Único de Saúde há mais de cinco anos. A prevalência do desfecho composto foi de 12,8%. Observou-se que as prevalências foram de 34% para o conhecimento sobre o Sistema de Notificação e, 34% para o conhecimento sobre o Programa Nacional de Segurança do Paciente e 38,3% para a presença de informações disponíveis no local de trabalho. Discussão: Os resultados apontam a necessidade de trabalhar questões informacionais com estes profissionais de maneira que no dia a dia estressante de trabalho a segurança do paciente seja algo naturalmente presente durante o cuidado odontológico nos espaços de trabalho. Conclusão: Conclui-se que os relatos de incidentes odontológicos foram poucos e o contexto informacional sobre o tema necessita ser trabalhado para que a segurança do paciente seja sempre foco de atenção na prática odontológica.

Hydrocephalus is a neurological condition with altered cerebrospinal fluid flow (CSF). The treatment is surgical and the most commonly used procedure is ventricle-peritoneal shunt. However, not all patients can undergo immediate surgery or achieve complete lesion reversal. Neuroprotective measures are valuable in such cases. It was evaluated whether the use of celecoxib, a selective inhibitor of COX-2, associated or not with ventricular-subcutaneous derivation, could offer benefits to the brain structures affected by experimental hydrocephalus. Seven-day-old male Wistar Hannover rats induced by intracisternal injection of kaolin 15% were used, divided into five groups with ten animals each: intact control (C), untreated hydrocephalus (H), hydrocephalus treated with celecoxib 20 mg/kg intraperitoneal (HTC), hydrocephalus treated with shunt (HTS) and hydrocephalus treated with shunt and celecoxib 20 mg/kg intraperitoneal (HTCS). Celecoxib was administered for 21 consecutive days, starting the day after hydrocephalus induction and continuing until the end of the experimental period. The surgery was performed seven days after inducing hydrocephalus. Multiple assessment methods were used, such as behavioral tests (water maze and open field), histological analysis (hematoxylin and eosin), immunohistochemistry (caspase-3, COX-2, and GFAP), and ELISA analysis of GFAP. The results of the behavioral and memory tests indicated that celecoxib improves the neurobehavioral response. The improvement can be attributed to the reduced neuroinflammation (p < 0.05), and astrogliosis (p < 0.05) in different brain regions. In conclusion, the results suggest that celecoxib holds great potential as an adjuvant neuroprotective drug for the treatment of experimental hydrocephalus.

Aversive memory extinction comprises a novel learning that blocks retrieving a previously formed traumatic memory. In this sense, aversive memory extinction is an excellent tool for decreasing fear responses. However, this tool it's not effective in the long term because of original memory spontaneous recovery. Thus, searching for alternative strategies that strengthen extinction learning is essential. In the current study, we evaluated the effects of a novel context (i.e., novelty) exposure on aversive memory extinction enhancement over days and the dopaminergic system requirement. Given the purpose, experiments were conducted using 3-month-old male Wistar rats. Animals were trained in inhibitory avoidance (IA). Twenty-four hours later, rats were submitted to a weak extinction protocol. Still, 30 min before the first extinction session, animals were submitted to an exploration of a novel context for 5 min. After, memory retention and persistence were evaluated 24 h, 3, 7, 14, and 21 days later. The exposition of a novel context caused a decrease in aversive responses in all days analyzed and an increase in dopamine levels in the hippocampus. The intrahippocampal infusion of dopamine in the CA1 area or the stimulation of the ventral tegmental area (VTA) by a glutamatergic agonist (NMDA) showed similar effects of novelty. In contrast, VTA inhibition by a gabaergic agonist (muscimol) impaired the persistence of extinction learning induced by novelty exposition and caused a decrease in hippocampal dopamine levels. In summary, we show that novel context exposure promotes persistent aversive memory extinction, revealing the significant role of the dopaminergic system.

BACKGROUND: Anthropometric measurements can be used to identify children at risk of developing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The study aimed to assess which anthropometric measurements (AMs) are most associated with an increased predisposition to develop OSA in healthy children and adolescents. METHODS: We performed a systematic review (PROSPERO #CRD42022310572) that searched eight databases and gray literature. RESULTS: In eight studies with low-to-high risk of bias, investigators reported the following AMs: body mass index (BMI), neck circumference, hip circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, neck-to-waist ratio, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio, and facial AMs. The meta-analysis showed that the OSA group had an average of 1.00 cm greater for the neck circumference (p < 0.001; Cohen's d = 2.26 [0.72, 5.23]), 3.07 cm greater for the waist circumference (p = 0.030; Cohen's d = 0.28 [0.02, 0.53]), 3.96 cm greater for the hip circumference (p = 0.040; Cohen's d = 0.28 [0.02, 0.55]), 5.21° greater for the cervicomental angle (p = 0.020; Cohen's d = 0.31 [0.03, 0.59]), and 1.23° greater for maxillary-mandibular relationship angle (p < 0.001; Cohen's d = 0.47 [0.22, 0.72]) than the control group. The mandibular depth angle had a reduction of 1.86° (p = 0.001; Cohen's d = -0.36° [-0.65, -0.08]) in control than in patients with OSA. The BMI (p = 0.180), waist-to-hip ratio (p = 0.280), neck-to-waist ratio (p = 0.070), maxillary depth angle (p = 0.250), and upper/lower face height ratio (p = 0.070) showed no significant differences between groups. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to the control group, the OSA group exhibited a greater mean difference in neck circumference, the only anthropometric measurement with high certainty of evidence.

Abstract Objective Describe the epidemiological profile and social-economic burden that hydrocephalus patients represent to the national public health system, using data available at the online database of the Brazilian Health Ministry (DataSUS). Methods This is a populational study based on descriptive statistics of all clinical and surgical appointments included in the DataSUS database. Data included herein were collected between 2015 and 2021 and subdivided into three main groups, related to hydrocephalus incidence and mortality, hospitalizations, and financial costs. Results In the study period, 3993 new cases of congenital hydrocephalus were diagnosed, with 6051 deaths overall. The mortality rate in the country was 1.5/100000 live births and the prevalence was 0.374/100000 inhabitants. The number of hospitalizations resulting from treatment procedures and complications of hydrocephalus was 137,880 and there was a reduction of up to 27.2% during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemics concerning previous years. Total costs for hydrocephalus management in the country amounted to 140,610,585.51 dollars. Conclusions Hydrocephalus has a significant impact on public health budgets and pediatric mortality rates; however, it is probably underestimated, due to the paucity of demographic data and epidemiological studies in Latin America and, specifically, in Brazil. The dataSUS also has several limitations in accessing certain data related to hydrocephalus, making it difficult to have a more assertive understanding of the disease in Brazil. The results of this study provide important guidance for future research projects in clinical and experimental hydrocephalus and also the creation of public policies for better governance and care of hydrocephalus patients.

Hydrocephalus is defined as the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain ventricles. The usual treatment of hydrocephalus is surgical (shunt), but not all patients can undergo treatment immediately after diagnosis. Thus, neuroprotective measures were tested to minimize the tissue damage involved. Memantine is a non-competitive antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, which has shown a neuroprotective action in neurodegenerative diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the neuroprotective response of memantine in animals treated with or without a ventricular-subcutaneous shunt. Seven-day-old male Wistar rats induced by intracisternal injection of kaolin were used, divided into five groups: intact control (n = 10), hydrocephalic (n = 10), hydrocephalic treated with memantine (20 mg/kg/day) (n = 10), hydrocephalic treated with shunt (n = 10), hydrocephalic treated with shunt and memantine (20 mg/kg/day) (n = 10). Memantine administration was started on the day after hydrocephalus induction and continued until the last day of the experimental period, totaling 21 consecutive days of drug application. The CSF shunt surgery was performed seven days after hydrocephalus induction. Behavioral tests (open field, and modified Morris water maze), histological, and immunohistochemical evaluations were performed. Treatment with memantine resulted in significant improvement (p < 0.05) in sensorimotor development, preservation of spatial memory, reduction of astrocytic reaction in the corpus callosum, cortex, and germinal matrix. When associated with the shunt, it has also been shown to reduce the cell death cascade. It is concluded that memantine is a promising adjuvant drug with beneficial potential for the treatment of lesions secondary to hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: The preventive role of muscular strength on diminishing neuroinflammation is yet unknown. In this study, the role of the prophylactic muscular strength exercise was investigated in order to verify whether it would diminish cognitive alterations and modify the antioxidant intracellular scenery in an animal neuroinflammatory model in of the CA1 region of the hippocampus. METHODS: The animals received muscular strength training (SE) three times a week for eight weeks. Subsequently, the stereotaxic surgery was performed with an intra-hippocampal infusion of either saline solution (SAL) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Next, we performed the behavioral tests: object recognition and social recognition. Then, the animals were euthanized, and their hippocampus and prefrontal cortex were collected. In another moment, we performed the dosage of the antioxidant activity and histological analysis. RESULTS: The results showed that the muscular strength exercises could show a beneficial prophylactic effect in the cognitive deficiencies caused by acute neuroinflammation. Regarding oxidative stress, there was an increase in catalase enzyme activity (CAT) in the group (SE + LPS) compared to the control groups (p < 0.05). As for the cognitive alterations, there were found in the (SE + LPS) group, diminishing the mnemonic hazard of the discriminative and social memories compared to the control groups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: We concluded, therefore, that the exercise performed prophylactically presents a protective effect capable of minimizing such mnemonic deficits and increasing catalase enzyme activity in rats that suffered a local neuroinflammatory process in the hippocampus.

Hydrocephalus is characterized by the accumulation of CSF within the cerebral ventricles and the subarachnoid space. Ventricular volume can progressively increase and generate serious damage to the nervous system, with cerebral hypoxia/ischemia as one of the most important factors involved. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) improves oxygen supply to tissues, which can reduce the progression of lesions secondary to ventricular enlargement. We evaluated whether HBOT associated with CSF diversion can promote neuroprotective effects to structures damaged by ventriculomegaly and understand its role. Seven-day-old male Wistar Hannover rats submitted to hydrocephalus by intracisternal injection of 15% kaolin were used. The animals were divided into six groups, with ten animals in each: control, control associated with hyperbaric therapy, hydrocephalic without treatment, hydrocephalic treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, hydrocephalic treated with CSF deviation, and hydrocephalic treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy associated with CSF deviation. To assess the response to treatment, behavioral tests were performed such as modified Morris water maze and object recognition, evaluation by transcranial ultrasonography, histology by Hematoxylin-Eosin and Luxol Fast Blue, immunohistochemistry for GFAP, Ki-67, Caspase-3, COX-2, NeuN and SOD1, and biochemical ELISA assay for GFAP and MBP. The results show that the association of treatments exerts neuroprotective effects such as neurobehavioral improvement, preservation of periventricular structures, antioxidant effect, and reduction of damage resulting from ischemia and the neuroinflammatory process. We conclude that HBOT has the potential to be used as an adjuvant treatment to CSF deviation surgery in experimental hydrocephalus.

Alzheimer's disease affects thousands of people worldwide. Alternatives aiming to prevent the disease or reduce its symptoms include different physical exercise configurations. Here we investigate the potential of concurrent exercise to prevent recognition memory deficits in an Alzheimer's disease-like model induced by the hippocampal beta-amyloid (Aß) injection in Wistar rats. We demonstrate that the concurrent exercise, which included running and strength exercises performed in the same exercise session, is ineffective in preventing recognition memory deficits in the Aß rats. Besides, higher levels of reactive oxygen species were found in the concurrent exercise group's hippocampus. The running exercise administrated alone prevented recognition memory impairments.

The neuroprotective effect of Edaravone in young hydrocephalic rats associated with a CSF derivation system was evaluated. The drug has already been shown to be beneficial in experimental hydrocephalus, but the combination of this drug with shunt surgery has not yet been investigated. Fifty-seven-day-old Wistar rats submitted to hydrocephalus by injection of kaolin in the cisterna magna were used and divided into five groups: control (n = 10), hydrocephalic (n = 10), hydrocephalic treated with Edaravone (20 mg/kg/day) (n = 10), hydrocephalic treated with shunt (n = 10) and hydrocephalic treated with shunt and Edaravone (n = 10). Administration of the Edaravone was started 24 h after hydrocephalus induction (P1) and continued until the experimental endpoint (P21). The CSF shunt surgery was performed seven days after hydrocephalus induction (P7). Open-field tests, histological evaluation by hematoxylin and eosin, immunohistochemistry by Caspase-3 and GFAP, and ELISA biochemistry by GFAP were performed. Edaravone reduced reactive astrogliosis in the corpus callosum and germinal matrix (p < 0.05). When used alone or associated with CSF shunt surgery, the drug decreased the cell death process (p < 0.0001) and improved the morphological aspect of the astroglia (p < 0.05). The results showed that Edaravone associated with CSF bypass surgery promotes neuroprotection in young hydrocephalic rats by reducing reactive astrogliosis and decreasing cell death.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the accumulation of the amyloid-ß peptide in the brain, leading to early oxidative stress and neurotoxicity. It has been suggested that physical exercise could be beneficial in preventing AD, but studies with multicomponent training are scanty. OBJECTIVE: Verify the effects of multicomponent exercise training to prevent deficits in recognition memory related to Aß neurotoxicity. METHODS: We subjected Wistar rats to multicomponent training (including aerobic and anaerobic physical exercise and cognitive exercise) and then infused amyloid-ß peptide into their hippocampus. RESULTS: We show that long-term multicomponent training prevents the amyloid-ß-associated neurotoxicity in the hippocampus. It reduces hippocampal lipid peroxidation, restores antioxidant capacity, and increases glutathione levels, finally preventing recognition memory deficits. CONCLUSION: Multicomponent training avoids memory deficits related to amyloid-ß neurotoxicity on an animal model.

Numerous studies have reported abnormalities in the development of oral structures in congenital infections that also involve microcephaly. In this context, it is necessary to identify possible dental anomalies of shape and/or number in patients with Zika virus syndrome using radiography. The study population consisted of 35 children born with congenital ZIKV who underwent intraoral radiographic examinations for 24 consecutive months. A modified periapical technique was performed in an occlusal position for the maxilla and mandible. Categorical data were expressed as absolute and percentage frequencies and compared using Pearson's Chi-square test, with a 95% confidence interval. Of the entire sample, eight children (22.8%) had dental anomalies of shape and/or number, and four children (11.4%) presented with both anomalies, with agenesis of the upper and lower deciduous/permanent incisors and dental form modifications, such as microdontia and anomalous cusps. When we considered age and sex, there was no statistically significant difference between patients who presented with agenesis and those who presented with modifications. Children with congenital Zika virus syndrome were more likely to have dental modifications in the number and shape of their teeth, and it is essential to implement medium- to long-term monitoring to diagnose other possible alterations throughout the development of the mixed and permanent dentition, favoring their treatment.

PURPOSES: Demonstrate that transcranial ultrasonography (TUS) scanning is viable and useful as a diagnostic method in experimental hydrocephalus, as well as to compare measurements of cerebral and ventricular width obtained from TUS scans of hydrocephalic rats with post-mortem anatomical specimens, aiming for the development of accurate criteria to establish ventricular enlargement and progression of hydrocephalus subsequently. METHODS: Thirty-five male Wistar rats were used. Following hydrocephalus induction, they underwent a transcranial ultrasound scan to measure cerebral and ventricular dimensions, in the fourth and 21 post-induction days. By the end of the experiments, measurements obtained from TUS scans were compared with actual values as seen in the post-mortem specimens of each animal. RESULTS: Ventricular dilation could be clearly visualized in hydrocephalic animals. We performed intraclass correlation coefficient and linear regression analyses that have demonstrated a precise correlation between measurements of TUS scans and post-mortem specimens; we have found a similarity of 0,95 for the cerebral diameter and 0,97 for ventricular width. CONCLUSIONS: Transcranial ultrasonography is a useful and reliable diagnostic tool for experimental hydrocephalus; also, it can be used to assess the progression of ventriculomegaly in animal models of hydrocephalus.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of sodium alendronate on orthodontic tooth movement in rats using microtomographic analysis. SETTINGS AND SAMPLE POPULATION: Thirty male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) were divided into three groups of 10 rats and administered saline (control), 1 mg/kg sodium alendronate or 6 mg/kg sodium alendronate, respectively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The drug was administered once per week for 5 weeks by gavage. Orthodontic movement was induced during the last 2 weeks of medication administration by inserting a closed nickel-titanium spring between the left upper first molar and central incisors. The opposite side served as the control. Tooth movement and bone trabeculation in the furcation region were evaluated by microtomographic analysis in the first (moved) and third (static) molars. The data were subjected to one-way or two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni test (P < .05). RESULTS: The microtomographic images of the group that received 6 mg/kg sodium alendronate demonstrated significantly less tooth movement (P = .048), less space between the trabeculae (P = .031) and greater number of bone trabeculae (P = .033) compared to the other groups. There were no statistically significant differences in bone volume and mean trabecular thickness between the three groups. The static teeth did not show the same alterations (P > .05). CONCLUSION: Sodium alendronate treatment reduced tooth movement in rats.

Abstract: Numerous studies have reported abnormalities in the development of oral structures in congenital infections that also involve microcephaly. In this context, it is necessary to identify possible dental anomalies of shape and/or number in patients with Zika virus syndrome using radiography. The study population consisted of 35 children born with congenital ZIKV who underwent intraoral radiographic examinations for 24 consecutive months. A modified periapical technique was performed in an occlusal position for the maxilla and mandible. Categorical data were expressed as absolute and percentage frequencies and compared using Pearson's Chi-square test, with a 95% confidence interval. Resumo Objetivo Fazer um mapeamento e uma discussão sobre o conhecimento científico envolvendo o objeto de pesquisa Condições de saúde bucal e depressão em idosos institucionalizados. Método Revisão de Escopo do tipo mapeamento da literatura. O mapeamento dos dados selecionados foi feito pela técnica de sistematização de dados por meio da Análise de Conteúdo Somativa na perspectiva de Temas Manifestos nos textos. Após as exclusões foram selecionados 27 artigos. Resultados Com a análise dos artigos foi possível dividi-los em dois temas. Todos os continentes possuem publicações acerca do tema. Sobre sua metodologia, muitas pesquisas com desenho de estudos dedutivos foram realizadas e poucas pesquisas foram desenvolvidas com métodos indutivos. Conclusão O presente estudo identificou que existe uma interlocução entre algumas condições de saúde bucal (xerostomia e perda dentária) e prevalência de transtornos depressivos em idosos institucionalizados.


Abstract Objective To map and discuss scientific knowledge involving the research object Oral health conditions and depression in institutionalized old people. Method Scope review of the literature mapping type. The mapping of the selected data was done using the data systematization technique through the Summative Content Analysis from the perspective of Manifest Themes in the texts. After the exclusions, 27 articles were selected. Results With the analysis of the articles it was possible to divide them into two themes. All continents have publications on the topic. Regarding its methodology, a lot of research with the design of deductive studies was carried out and few researches were developed with inductive methods. Conclusion The present study identified that there is a communication between some oral health conditions (xerostomia and tooth loss) and the prevalence of depressive disorders in institutionalized old people.

A dismenorreia é a queixa ginecológica mais comum em mulheres jovens adultas, com um índice que varia entre 43% e 93% das mulheres que menstruam. A dismenorreia membranosa (DM), uma subclassificação da dismenorreia, é definida como a descida espontânea de tecido endometrial pela vagina, cursando com dor em có- lica intensa e súbita. O relato de caso descrito evidencia três episódios típicos de DM, com recorrência em três vezes distintas, após uso do mesmo anticoncepcional oral combinado de baixa dosagem. Esta publicação é importante para a comunidade científica devido à escassez de informações e artigos científicos publicados sobre o assunto, propondo a elucidação de alguns aspectos sobre o tema.(AU)


Dysmenorrhea is the most common gynecological complaint in young adult women, with an index that varies between 43% and 93% of women who menstruate. Membranous dysmenorrhea (MD) is a subclassification of dysmenorrhea and is defined as the spontaneous descent of endometrial tissue through the vagina, leading to severe and sudden colic pain. The case report described shows three typical episodes of MD, with recurrence three times after the use of the same low-dose combined oral contraceptive. This publication is important for the scientific community due to the scarcity of information and scientific articles published about this subject, proposing to elucidate some aspects about this theme.(AU

As a result of the installation of the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 19) pandemic, online education has become an important teaching alternative, and new challenges about how to teach were found. Here we report our experience in offering an online course to review Human Physiology. We proposed synchronous and asynchronous activities using different online tools to address topics considered key to understanding the different systems of human physiology. The students considered important the use of this type of methodology, which uses different online tools to help understand the Human Physiology contents. The students highlighted the use of the Lt platform, Zoom, Mentimeter, and YouTube as the preferred online tools to use in physiology learning.
